When we think about blood sugar, we think of food and movement: rarely sleep. Yet the night is one of the underrated levers of metabolism.
What too little sleep does
In controlled studies, just one week of shortened sleep lowered insulin sensitivity in healthy people.1 A Columbia University study showed that as little as 90 minutes less sleep per night over six weeks raised insulin resistance: especially in women.2 And in large observational studies, short sleep duration (under about six hours) goes hand in hand with a higher diabetes risk.3
Why this is the case
Several mechanisms act together: raised cortisol levels, more low-grade inflammation, a disrupted internal clock (circadian misalignment) and altered hunger hormones (leptin and ghrelin) that increase appetite.3 Together they worsen insulin action and encourage unfavourable eating habits.
How much sleep the metabolism needs
For most adults, around 7 to 9 hours is in the favourable range. It’s not only duration that counts but quality too: frequently interrupted or restless sleep burdens glucose metabolism much like too little sleep. Even individual bad nights can measurably worsen insulin action the next day.
Sleep apnoea: the underrated factor
A particularly important, often overlooked point: obstructive sleep apnoea (night-time breathing pauses, often with loud snoring). It’s closely linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Anyone who snores heavily, wakes up feeling wrecked or is constantly tired during the day should have this checked medically: treatment often improves blood sugar too.
Practical sleep hygiene
- Fixed times, keep as consistent a rhythm as possible, including at weekends.
- Sleep dark and cool, reduce screens before bed.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol late in the day: both disrupt the night.
For me, a calm, flat overnight curve on the CGM is one of the best markers that sleep and metabolism are in sync. (Single-case observation, n=1.)
