Why movement lowers blood sugar
When muscles work, they need energy and take glucose from the blood. The key point: they activate so-called GLUT-4 transporters, which move glucose into the cell even independently of insulin.1 That’s why movement works even when insulin resistance is present.
The walk after eating
Movement right after eating is especially well documented. Studies show that just 10 to 20 minutes of light to moderate walking after a meal markedly lowers the blood-sugar spike.2 In one study, the value one hour after eating was about 40 mg/dl lower with a walk than without movement.3 The effect appears the very first time and isn’t insulin-dependent.3
Beyond the single walk
Regular movement improves insulin sensitivity not only acutely but lastingly: measurable adaptations appear after about eight weeks.1 Both endurance and strength training contribute. Short bouts spread across the day (“movement snacks”) work too.
